About the Book

Jay O’Brien works long shifts in an underfunded East London care home — steady money, steady guilt, and a life going nowhere fast. He’s a decent lad in a world where “decent” doesn’t get you much beyond tired.

His mates aren’t the kind of people you build a future with. A sharp-tongued strategist. A charming liability. A joker masking fear. An old-school operator who’s seen more than he says. They’re not quite a crew — half of them can’t stand each other — but trouble has a habit of tying unlikely people together.

Everything changes the night Jay notices something strange in a dying man’s room. One discovery — small enough to fit in a pocket, dangerous enough to change everything — flips his world on its head.

What follows drags Jay and the others into a dangerous game of secrets, debts, old ghosts and new enemies. London’s shadows start moving, and people who should have stayed forgotten suddenly aren’t.

When you stumble into someone else’s unfinished business, it’s never the start of a story. It’s the middle of one — and the ending is already waiting for you.
